Obertas is the premier Polish Song and Dance Company of
Brisbane and was formed in early 1982 for the Initial
purpose of performing in the Opening Ceremony of
the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
Obertas is a not-for-profit community organization
that has been an incorporated body since 2011.
Obertas has been continuously active since 1982 and
funds its activities through fundraising efforts.
Donations from sponsors and supporters are always
welcome.
Under the artistic direction of its founder and choreographer, Henry (Michael) Kurylewski, the company has given numerous performances at local venues, as well as in capital cities around Australia and New Zealand, participating in television appearances, fourteen PolArt Festivals, seven Queensland Multi-cultural Festivals, two Shell Folkloric Concerts and World Expo ’88.
The Polish Song and Dance Company of Brisbane OBERTAS was formed in early 1982 for the initial purpose of performing in the Opening Ceremony of the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, but now OBERTAS has a reputation for folkloric songs and dances from a diverse range of Polish regions and historic contexts, and continues to be the premier showpiece of Polish folklore in south-east Queensland.
Born in Brisbane to Polish parents who emigrated to Australia following World War
II. His passion for dance emerged at the age of 10 after seeing the Polish State Song
& Dance Ensemble MAZOWSZE perform in Brisbane in 1967 followed by
appearances by the Polish State Song & Dance Ensemble ŚLĄSK in 1974, with both
companies inspiring him to study Polish folk dance.
